Spiritual Habits of Effective People: Meeting Regularly

“And let us not neglect our meeting together, as some people do, but encourage one another” (Hebrews 10:25 NLT).

We develop spiritual fitness when we meet regularly and encourage one another. When you get together with other believers regularly, this is called fellowship—sharing and caring together in a small group.

Do you ever need encouragement? Life can be tough and we all get discouraged. The fact is you’re never going to be an effective Christian if you try to go it alone. You need encouragement. You need other people. Life was not meant to be lived by itself.

I grew up in northern California in a little town called Redwood Valley. Just north of us were the giant redwoods. Redwood trees have very shallow roots. They withstand the wind by spreading out and intertwining roots and they hold each other up. What a perfect picture of fellowship! We spread out, we intertwine, and we hold each other up. We strengthen each other.

Snow flakes are frail, but if enough of them stick together they can stop traffic. You can’t do a whole lot and I can’t do a whole lot, but together in a group we can do something. We can have an impact on this world.

Let me mention that I meet people who say, “I’m going to miss church this week. It’s no big deal.” They are simply unaware how you can dry up spiritually whenever you miss fellowship with other believers. In fact, you need to be in constant contact with other Christians, even beyond what you get on Sunday. You need more than just a “Sunday fix.” Every Christian needs a balance between large group celebration/worship and small group fellowship.

You need a big group so you can say, “I’m a part of something significant.” But you can’t share prayer requests within a large group; you can’t pray for each other; you can’t even know everybody. So you need to be in a small group, also.

What’s the result of getting together with other believers? “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work: If one falls down, his friend can help him up. But pity the man who falls and has no one to help him up!” (Ecclesiastes 4:9–10 NIV).

"GOD IS NOT REALLY ENOUGH"
is that really the truth?

"All I need is You Lord, it's You, Lord, all I need is You..."
I'm sure we have sung many songs to that effect that tell God that ALL we ever need is Him and I'm sure to some extent we hold that to be true. But when we walk out of church and really reflect upon our lives, do we really believe He is all we need?
We may know it is a lie but the way we live our lives tells others it's the truth!

From young, I've enjoyed scanning books purely because I never had enough patience to finish the entire book at one go. Nevertheless, I would still end up reading most of the chapters in the book - just not in the chronology they were supposed to be read.

While I was looking through the book "Lies Women Believe" by Nancy Leigh DeMoss, I discovered that for reasons we cannot fully understand, Satan chose to target the woman for his strategy of deception. Twice in the New Testament, Paul pointed out that it was the woman who was deceived (2 Cor 11:3 & 1 Tim 2:14). [Okay, if you are a guy, you'll be mocking the women out there.] But I've also learnt that men are actually the ones who are ultimately responsible. (HA! So there! If you want to find out why, GO CHECK THIS BOOK OUT!)

Anyway, regardless of whether you are a woman or a man, I believe you can identify with the issue of whether God is really enough. Nancy wrote that when it comes down to the crux of things, we don't believe God's Word is truly sufficient to deal with our problems. It can deal with everyone else's problems; but it doesn't speak to my issues, my needs, my relationships, my situation. I need God's Word plus these eight books from the Christian bookstore; I need God's Word plus tapes and conferences and counselors.

She continued by acknowledging the fact that we know what's the right thing to believe i.e. Sure, we need God. But we need Him plus close friends; we need Him plus good health; we need Him plus a husband/companion; we need Him plus good grades or a good future.

So, do you really believe that if you have God you have enough?
Here's a short testimony written by a woman:

"God is not really enough"- I did not know I believed this until I realised how much trust I put in other things and people. I said trusted God fully and kept telling my husband we just needed to trust God, but then I would run to my friends to discuss our marriage or finances.

The challenge for us today is to evaluate our view of God and His power. Is He REALLY enough for us? Or do we look to other avenues to fill the void in our hearts - food, hobbies, shopping or even friends.

No one is perfect. We are all guilty of claiming that we need God but always having a 'plus something' at the end. So, let's all start with being aware of ourselves & consciously remember the song lyrics ''All I need is You, Lord, it's You, Lord. All I need is You." and I believe our lives will no longer be the same.

When You Feel Abandoned By God, Worship Him Anyway.

“Christ was without sin, but for our sake God made him share our sin in order that in union with him we might share the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 TEV).

When you feel abandoned by God yet continue to trust Him in spite of your feelings, you worship Him in the deepest way.

Remember what God has already done for you. If God never did anything else for you, He would still deserve your continual praise for the rest of your life because of what Jesus did for you on the cross. God’s Son died for you! This is the greatest reason for worship.

Unfortunately, we forget the cruel details of the agonizing sacrifice God made on our behalf. Familiarity breeds complacency. Even before His crucifixion, the Son of God was stripped naked, beaten until almost unrecognizable, whipped, scorned and mocked, crowned with thorns, and spit on contemptuously. Abused and ridiculed by heartless men, He was treated worse than an animal.

Then, nearly unconscious from blood loss, he was forced to drag a cumbersome cross up a hill, was nailed to it, and was left to die the slow, excruciating torture of death by crucifixion. While His lifeblood drained out, hecklers stood by and shouted insults, making fun of His pain and challenging His claim to be God.

Next, as Jesus took all of mankind’s sin and guilt on himself, God looked away from that ugly sight, and Jesus cried out in total desperation, “My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” Jesus could have saved himself—but then He could not have saved you.

Words cannot describe the darkness of that moment. Why did God allow and endure such ghastly, evil mistreatment? Why? So you could be spared from eternity in hell, and so you could share in His glory forever! The Bible says, “Christ was without sin, but for our sake God made Him share our sin in order that in union with Him we might share the righteousness of God” (2 Corinthians 5:21 TEV).

Jesus gave up everything so you could have everything. He died so you could live forever. That alone is worthy of your continual thanks and praise. Never again should you wonder what you have to be thankful for.

DE-CLUTTER THE CHAPEL DAY

While having lunch at Teck Whye coffee shop, Serene asked" " Today is Youth Day, where are all the youths?"
We unanimously answered: " Town."

That's right, while youths enjoyed their youth day, we had our massive clean up day. A couple of us (with only 1 youth among us who sacrificed his youth day) came together to throw, to clean, to revamp, to tidy the chapel- the place where we meet every saturday.
We have lots of photos for your viewing pleasure. It was a fun & satisfying day for those who were there though there were lots of dust, dirty hands, rubbish, "horse-ing" around and magic clean wipes (they are really good!).

Let the de-cluttering begin!!!

Wonder how all that stuff could fit into our youth cupboards?? It's a miracle!

OK, enough of talk, let the action begin. Jorel with the vaccum cleaner.

While cleaning, we found some really OLD SCHOOL stuff.

We asked: " what's that??"
The boys answered: " I think it's a transformer!!!"
*silence*

How's that for creativity?

After all the horse-ing around, we looked around and realise that there's more to pack! So it's back to work. haha.

After tonnes of ziplock bags and boxes, things are shaping up!

haha, love our "stationary/ stationery" box. Stationary because the box is stationary. haha!

And finally! After being there from around 10am to 4pm, we are done!!

Hah. serene on keyboard. She managed to fool us all, all 5 of us. But it shall be our secret. Want to hear her beautiful master piece? Haha, just ask any one of us. We have a video of her 1 min of fame.

Satisfied with how neat things were, it's time to pack up and leave. With Dan & Shuo xian's help, Serene and the boys helped to carry bags and bags of rubbish 3 floors down.
It was raining and the weather was perfect for an afternoon nap.
Needless to say, we were all fighting the zzz monster by then.

...and fortunately, Dan drove us home in his Integra.
(will leave you to imagine the ride experience, hah.)

I am so proud of you guys. It was a job well done. It was a tiring but satisfying day and it made me wonder, doesn't it feel so good when all the unwanted stuff/junk is thrown away, out of sight? The process is long & exhausting, it requires effort to dig in the mess and sort out what should be thrown away. But, once they were cleared, there were more space in the cupboard for new things and the place looked so pleasant.

Isn't it the same as dealing with our lives? Similarly, we need to de-clutter our lives, remove the junk in us so that we may have space to receive new things. No doubt, the process might be a gruelling one, but this liberating experience is a necessity to encourage growth. Till we get rid of the unwanted stuff, we cannot receive.

The chapel never looked this refreshing and clean. How about our own lives?
Can we say the same?

OKAYYYY, so the blog is a bit lagging in terms of updates!
so let me do a short one here before the full-blown posts from Chiangmai and other stuff FLOWS in (:

WE CAME BACK FROM iSCATTERSEEDS CONFERENCE! and i am sure all of us who went can safely say that we had a blast!
YOUTH CAMP will be ON from 11th to 14th DECEMBER, so mark your calendars now, and DON'T GO ON HOLIDAY DURING THAT PERIOD cause you really won't want to miss camp!
H1N1 is gripping the country! so practice social responsibility (my teacher's favourite word) and stay at home if you've got the flu/cough/sore throat/headache/FEVER.

You know, the H1N1 crisis spells BIG gains for some people:

doctors haha cause self-medication is now NOT the way to go, and everyone's seeing the doctor "just in case"
petrol companies - cause everyone who's a suspected case is being ferried by 993 ambulances to the hospital
tissue companies - more people are blowing their noses into tissues cause hankies are just not hygienic enough, and well, the newspapers' did say that if you see someone coughing/sneezing give them a clean tissue. (so i guess we are all complying!)
electricity company - cause everyone's doing e-learning/working from home (kena quarantine)

the list goes on.

it's okay if you are not one of those people stated up there, but what matters most is that you give GERMS NO HOPE WITH WATER AND SOAP!

TAKE CARE OF YOURSELVES, AND SEE YOU ON SATURDAY - cell as usual until further notice!

for those of us who are going, remember to CHARGE UP your cameras, bring all the stuff you need (e.g. your house, your car etc just be prepared to pay for the excess baggage), OH REMEMBER YOUR THAI BAHT. don't bring cigarette butts or Singaporean butts, but bring your thai one. and memorize those bargaining tips we've put down there!

anyway, for the rest of us in Singapore, don't forget to keep the entire church in prayer, and don't give up on your own personal walk with God either.

Were you there when the lights went out today? (dun-dun-dun)
Were you there when the thunder stormed? (dun-dun-dun)
Oh, oh, oh, oh, sometimes it causes me to tremble (tremble, tremble)

If you were there at church today, you would have been part of a once-in-a-lifetime experience where the half the power in the sanctuary went off (lights and projector only haha) as the thunder stormed overhead. As Pastor was praying at the end of the service, there was this momentary rush of water from above. You can brush it away as an incidence of nature if you like, but I like to think it was something of God, a reminder that He is truly our living water who will supply all our needs, cleanse us, sustain us and give us life.

Even as the first group of people fly off to Chiangmai tomorrow, let's continue to keep this whole journey in prayer. We know God's put this plan into action for a purpose, and that His purpose will DEFINITELY be fulfilled at the end of the day.
- Pray that he will prepare our hearts for an encounter with Him
- Pray that he will keep all the (haha Pastor's word) delegates safe and well in Thailand
- Pray for the people who are not going as well, that they will experience God at home too

Remember always that the same God who cares for the sparrow and feeds it, is the one who cares for YOU (:

Preparation for ISSC-part 2

Now if you think the people behind the blog entries are so lame, it's time now to get serious!

have you ever seen a Malay wedding in the void deck? they're usually lavish ceremonies with flowing tablecloths and tables of rich food and boy, they sure smell good too. i was walking past the void deck while a family was preparing for such a wedding and overheard someone saying that it was "fit for a king".

that set me thinking. if people were capable of having such extravagant ceremonies and set-ups for "kings" and "queens" of the day - i.e. the bride and groom - what would we do when Christ finally comes? will we label it some kind of crisis (haha) or will we be fully prepared with all our decorations up and all the musicians ready to welcome him?

Well, if you think this is too far-fetched, how about thinking about iscatter? Are we ready for an encounter with God? Are we prepared with a spirit of invitation to welcome Him?

There's a story in the Bible from John 12:1-8- Mary anointing Jesus with perfume. The girls had this discussion on one of our bible study on friday. The pint of pure nard Mary poured on Jesus's feet was expensive! It was worth a year's wages in those days. Without any hesitation, Mary broke the jar of perfume and poured it on Jesus. Once the jar is broken, all must be used because nothing can be kept. Some people may think that was such a waste or just simply absurd. But Mary had her eyes fixed only on Jesus, disregarding what people thought or said.

Don't you think Mary's style of worship was indeed fit for a King? Her worship was extravagant (giving the most prized possession she had). Using all the perfume in the jar and not keeping it symbolises that like worship, we need to give everything to God and hold nothing back. Worshipping a true King involves a total giving of ourselves to Him.

the Bible says that we'll never know or expect when God visits us, and calls for us to be ever-ready (like the battery). just as the whole family puts their heart and soul into planning and setting up the wedding for the special couple, let us, as a whole church-family prepare for His presence, putting our heart and soul into it. Let our worship and actions be a fragrant offering unto Him just like the fragrance of the perfume that Mary offered to Jesus.

Now, that would really get you ready for this trip. A heart that is desperate for God's encounter. Going to ISSC without experiencing God or any desire to commune with God is a wastage trip, friends. So, together with your luggage and thai baht, let's prepare our hearts & whatever we do to be ready and fit for a KING!

We are princess and princes because our Father is the King of Kings! See you at the ROYAL gathering at Chiang Mai. (of course, we'll see you at church tomorrow at 5pm for service first, haha)

you know, someone mused after the recording of these videos that the singing was totally different from that during worship. that really hit home. why is it that when we are singing for our friends we are exuberant and just sing for all we're worth, but when we sing to God it doesn't come so easily, so loudly, or so strongly? Why is it that every worship of ours is not like these two videos above, where we sing for all we are worth? I am sure George and Teresa were super happy when they saw their "gifts" from the youth ministry. won't God be glad when he hears our exuberant praise to him as well?

Though we are no experts and have no special love for thailand, we want to bring u the best tips and of course, that includes this foolproof guide on HOW TO BARGAIN WITH A THAI for dummies. We know you'll thank us one day!

How to bargain with a Thai

Bargaining is a part of market life for most Thais, so, before you stock up on all those souvenirs and handicraft goodies, you need a little practice. Consider this conversation...

You: "Sawadee krap/ka, nee tao rai na krap/ka?" (Hello, how much is this?). Your opening gambit should always be in Thai, this way they take you for a local ex-pat and assume you are less gullible; their opening gambit will almost certainly be more realistic. So, learn this phrase by heart (remember guys say 'krap' and girls say 'ka').

Them: Two hundred baht.

You: Two hundred baht, you're kidding, is this one from Bangkok? In Bangkok, I pay two hundred baht for much better quality. Maybe you drive all way to Bangkok buy this one, you get bad price, yes? (Thais love a bit of humour).

Them: (laughing) This one good quality sure, I buy from factory one hundred and fifty baht. Not buy Bangkok, Bangkok more expensive, maybe three hundred baht.

You: Three hundred baht? Where? Maybe you buy three hundred in Phuket, tourist in Phuket have too much money, Chiang Mai very cheap, I ask lady over there how much, she say one hundred baht. Maybe this one made with gold for two hundred baht sure!

Them: (laughing) Yes made gold sure, two hundred good price sure. You want? How many you buy, can make good price for you.

You: I buy already in Bangkok, I get good price, only fifty baht sure!

Them: (laughing in disbelief) Ah, cannot, fifty baht not enough, buy from factory more than one hundred baht.

You: Okay, I go factory tomorrow. Less than one hundred baht for sure. Here velly expensive. I like to buy from you, you very beautiful/handsome/friendly/whatever (Thais love flattery).

Them: Okay, one hundred fifty baht, special for you. You take five I give for six hundred baht all.

You: How about twenty, what price, nine hundred baht?

Them: (laughing) Aaeeeii, no can do. Five, six hundred baht. Buy for wife, children, all. You have wife/husband? (You get this question often).

You: Have wife many, too many, give headache, must buy for all but not enough money (Again, Thais love humour, it softens them up.)

Them: (laughing) Many wife! You butterfly. Okay, I give you five hundred baht, five, special price for you.

You: Thank you, only need three, how much three, three hundred baht?

Them: Ah, cannot, three hundred too little. Please mister/miss, must feed baby (a popular imaginary accessory), work here every night, now foreigner few, no business (reverse psychology, softening you up).

You: Okay, this shop I buy many thing, shirt, book, souvenir, all together, then you give good price okay.

Them: I have many thing, you like this velly cheap… (this is where they try offloading their whole stall on you, suddenly getting wildly optimistic and excited).

You: (deliver coup de grace, suddenly change your mind, say no thanks and abruptly walk away slowly)

Them: (come running after you with original product) Okay, mister/miss, I give you eighty baht, best price, please, nowhere cheaper.

You: Eighty baht? Seventy.

Them: (no longer laughing, looking at you with killer emotional blackmail expression). Eighty.

You: Okay, eighty baht, I take three

(At this point you become altruistic and use your leverage to tip them nicely, give him/her ninety or a hundred baht for each one, they appreciate the gesture, all smiles, everyone happy.)

*She probably bought it for fifty baht, but these people make very little, be kind, a hundred baht is no more than a couple of bucks.

Good tip, aye?! Like we said, we know you'll thank us one day!

so what do you know about Singapore?
we, the people of 0606 definitely know a lot more now after running around the western/southern part of the country looking for the answers to a very cool crossword puzzle.

Jalan Tekukor Park?
four pretty AMAZING groups got together on the 6th of June for an AMAZING race they would not be likely to forget. armed with a crossword puzzle, a few well-chosen photographs and some clues about which buses to take, the groups were let off 5 minutes apart with a few good wishes from our friendly organizers Joezer, Candice, Joshua and Adriel.
Giver of Life?
Them left first. (no this is not a grammar error, a group was actually named THEM or something sounding vaguely similar) when it was announced that they could leave, the foursome grabbed their handy ziplock pack and went running off into the sunshine...

this is THEM.

from then, a group was let of at every 5 minute interval, and finally my group, the great AHCHOO (bless you) was let off.
How much does it cost to park for 3h 22min at KAP?
After many bus rides - some were entirely wrong buses, others we just got off at the wrong stop or something! - and many miles of walking, we managed to find most of the answers to the clues.
the Bukit Batok Nature Park held within it a treasure called the Syonan Chureito built by 500 Allied POWs and one-two-one steps high...............the stars on the floor of the Jalan Tekukor Park numbered 2 less than those on the national flag, and the muzzled boel-boel was seen walking about as well...............the hottest chick in town was found in the king's castle at albert park.................and singapore's not-so-good tuition centre (still putting up the results of PSLE 07?) at tiong bahru plaza!.............the science centre held in its grounds the KG-46, the super cool thing-to-be-opened-in-2011, and well, the giver of life.

decipering the "final destination" was a combination of pure intelligence and well "text twist" skills where E E N N R O S S A D V W H messed themselves up to give us H E N D E R S O N W A V E S!

Who scored 274 and 4A* in the 2007 PSLE?
in the end, the teams got to the end-point in EXACTLY the same line-up as they left the church, and were rewarded with vouchers they could use for a team gathering the next time around! what's left to do but STAND AMAZED don't you think!

WHY PRETEND?

Today while walking home I saw these two little girls at the void deck acting out a scene from some Channel 8 Chinese Drama serial. One was about 5 and she was pretending to be a mother, and the other girl was pretending to be a grandfather of some sort. They were so absorbed in their roles that they did not even hear their father call them home.

It reminded me of how much we humans like to pretend. At school, we might like to pretend that we're something better, so that others will like us more. At work, we might take on a different personality and a different approach, so that we might be closer to that promotion or be able to build better relationships with other people. At church, we might like to pretend that we are always on a spiritual high, always close to God and maybe just - faultless. Sometimes, we pretend so much that we even forget who our real selves are, absorbed in our role-playing and role-switching that we are entirely oblivious God's voice.

Seeing those two girls at the void deck and their father reminded me of how our father looks at us just as we are. Nothing we do can make Him love us more, just like nothing we do can make Him love us less. So why pretend to be something more than we are not? Know that God loves you and that He will still love you if you are less than perfect. After all, He created us imperfect so that we would find a need to rely on Him.

A recent devotional I received from Rick Warren's Daily Devotionals read...

If you only love on and off like a light switch, you do not love others like God wants you to love. Jesus said, "If you only love those who love you, what credit is that to you?" (Luke 6:32 NIV). His point is this: anybody can love those who love them in return. Becoming a master lover means you learn to love the unlovable. It's when you love people who don't love you, when you love people who irritate you, when you love people who stab you in the back or gossip about you. This may seem like an impossible task and it is. That's why we need God's love in us, so we can then love others: "We know and rely on the love God has for us" (1 John 4:16 NIV). When you realize how much God loves you—with an extravagant, irresistible, unconditional love—then his love will change your entire focus on life. If we don't receive God's love for us, we'll have a hard time loving other people. I'm talking about loving the unlovely, loving the difficult, loving the irritable, loving people who are different or demanding. You can't do that until you have God's love coming through you. You need to know God's love so it can overflow out of your life into others. Love must become your lifestyle, the habit of your life. But it starts with a decision. Are you ready? Your life is worth far more than you think, and by learning to love others with the love God gives you, you will have an influence far greater than you could ever imagine. If you will commit to this, you will experience love as God means it to be, filled with hope, energy, and joy.

My prayer for you is "that your love will grow more and more; that you will have knowledge and understanding with your love..." (Philippians 1:9 NCV).

but if you take an egg and crack it over a boiling pot of water, something nice happens.

when things are put in the right place at the right time, something wonderful results.

and that's what God did.

he took his son and put him in a "boiling pot of water", a place of pain and suffering none of us even want to begin to imagine. it wasn't a mindless action. rather, it was the crux of an amazing plan. Jesus was put in the right place at the right time, and something wonderful happened.

we're not a bunch of people saved by coincidence. we're people who're part of God's plan to save. God's plan to give us a life we would never have deserved. we are mindlessly cracking eggs all the time, creating huge messes, but God had enough grace to give us new hope. he cleaned up even the biggest messes in our lives by sending his son, Jesus, to take the blame, and made something wonderful happen.

Hi Guys,

If you have been wondering where were we the past few days....
If you have been wondering if we were dead or alive.....

Here's a very honest post to let u know that we are very much alive!
haha. However, forgive us if we are a bit slow in posting up photos and updates, that's because we are also students like most of you! So, coping with our studies and ministry and with our disappointing computers that are such a let down these days...it is rather challenging to keep u guys entertained on a very regular basis. December hols are over, people! haha.

BUT. the month of February is the month to look forward to.
WHY? well, we have so many activities going on on saturdays that even the dance ministry have to postpone their usual saturday practices to sunday for the whole month of February!

If you have been coming regularly, you would know that we just had a FANTASTIC SMOULDERING STEAMBOAT SPECIAL. The 10 steamboats, the OVERFLOW of food, the chattering voices of 50 hungry youths, the cool background music and lil boys playing around (ms foo's kids.heh)... it was WHAT A NIGHT. But what made the night such a NIGHT... has got to be the cleaning up!!! Massive cleaning/washing up of steamboats and ladels. haha. We even had to queue in the kitchen. Thanks to all who stayed back to help clean & mop. The help was much much appreciated! But thanks to all the mothers out there who I bet had to wash our steamboats a second time. HAHA.

But do u know what's even more unbelievable? There was so much of leftover food that some of the youths even had a second round of steamboat on sunday! haha. yummy....

I bet we all had tonnes of fun and the best part is that we've got them captured! yup! a picture speaks a thousand words...........

it's the FABULOUSLY FUN month of the year! we have so much planned for February it is almost unbelievable! (but believe me)

the MCI youth ministry will be taking part in 2 mega(or miniga) events this month - the SUPER-SMOULDERING STEAMBOAT SPECIALS, which is next week, and FUSION, which is on the 21st!

if you haven't already done so, sign up for the super-smouldering steamboat special with FLO or your group leader, and pay BY TOMORROW to ensure that you have an ample portion of food to steam in the boat! there will be cell before the boat leaves, same time, same place! (if you don't know where that is or what this means -- 4pm, chapel, MCI)

ALSO, FUSION forms have to be submitted asap to the red letterbox at the back of the chapel so we can post them to the organizers! it's also really really ultra super important that you get a packet of colour pencils to bring as the entry fee! :D it is for missions work!

So get ready for the month of Fanatical Fun and Fellowship with Fantastic Food (SSSS) and Fusion in the month of February!

Managing Your Money
it's that time of the year again, when red packets of money flow into our piggy banks. when you receive that special inflow of money, remember that there are better ways to spend it than how you were planning to (unless of course this is how you were planning to spend it)

the first thing you should save for would be the iScatterSeeds Conference, because the seeds (seats) are rather expensive for people who don't work (like most of us) anyway, it's going to be an experience of a lifetime, so remember to save some for that!

the second thing you really really have to save some money for would be the SUPER-SMOULDERING STEAMBOAT SPECIAL of course! it's the 7th of February, 7p.m. and costs ONLY 7+3=10 dollars :D remember to sign up by the 31st (to facilitate buying of groceries) with your group leader or FLO. if you have already marked your calendars for this steamy treat, get ready to pay after chinese new year!

the last thing you would probably have to set aside some money for would be FLO'S BIRTHDAY PRESENT. (hahaha just joking)

you know, there are so many things that are floating around, so many things we want to do. but one very important thing is to commit the ministry and our lives to God, cause ultimately, it's His plan that will come through. if we are following His plan He will provide us with all our resources and everything, but if we aren't, it's not going to go very far. So continue to pray with us, that we will truly see the future through God's eyes. that before we take any steps forward we will be clear that this is indeed what God wants for the ministry.

MCI'S anniversary

a few short hours after the previous post was put up regarding our five-hour long meeting, pastor told the congregation that "the youth leaders met for five hours yesterday".
there are a few ways he could have found out (pastor will kill me if he really reads the blog.)

2. he has inside info on how the meeting went
3. he is extremely efficient
4. he reads the blog
5. all of the above

today there was no cell, but you know, your leaders were HARD AT WORK. hahaha. nahh, we were planning for the ministry and seeking God's direction for it in the next few years and all i can say is IT IS GOING TO BE EXCITING (:

after almost five hours of discussion and planning, we came up with these two HUGE sheets of mahjong paper. hahaha, yes that IS how much we discussed today!
anyway, one thing YOU guys have to do is to really keep this ministry and the leaders in prayer, so that our direction will be in line with God's direction for this ministry! pray also for faith, and a lot of it, because there will be much uncertainty when we look into the future and into other areas to explore.

you know, some of you guys out there might feel like God is calling you into a certain area but you feel you are not ready or not prepared enough for it. let me tell you something, God doesn't call the qualified, He qualifies the called. and as long as you are willing to be used by Him, He will use you! if you think God's calling you to serve the others in His family, come and sound it out with your leader or someone older you feel comfortable talking to (:

i believe all of us had a great time at overflow, and here are two testimonies from people who have been blessed by overflow!
Faith:

At first..when I found out that I was going to be an assistant leader..I was'nt sure of what was going to be in store for me..I felt nervous and unsure as I was not sure of how to lead a group.During the camp..as I lead alongside Cassandra..I started to feel more confident and spoke up more often.Then,I realised that leading a group was not that scary as I thought as I knew that God was there to guide me.Overall..I felt that the camp was a good experience for me and I realised through the camp that
Overflow was God's power to be able to touch the hearts of many.(Especially during the altar call.)

May-Eleanor:

I still remember my initial reluctance in going for Youth camp this year. When some of the guys asked me whether I was going, I told them that I wasn’t sure because I might have to go overseas to attend interviews. Someone even said, “better pray she doesn’t get it!” I thought to myself: “Wow, that sure is mean”.

Despite all my reservations, I decided to go for the camp in faith; in faith that I wouldn’t be called for an interview during that period of time, and also in faith that I will be called for an interview sometime after.

This whole year, I have had a lot of trouble trusting God. As I have shared with some people, I am someone who is very self-reliant, and each time I’m faced with a problem or a tough situation, I would get overly stressed and worried – all because God was never the first one I turned to.

During the camp, there were many things that spoke to me. I still remember Pek Ya’s workshop, and I have realized that it’s not so much of what we do, but what’s in our hearts. We can be very active in church, but yet our hearts might not be right with God. Similarly, we might also not be the most passionate about church ministry, but we can still serve God in other avenues – in our studies, our jobs… in our everyday lives, through simple things. What is most important is that we do everything to glorify God.

Then came the night of the altar call, where I believe that God spoke to many of us. Like many of you, I cried, and now I’m not exactly sure why. But I know that I was truly sorry, for pushing God out all the time. I realized that I needed to open myself up more, especially to God. I needed to let Him into my life, to be in everything that I do. God shouldn’t be my last resort; I shouldn’t turn to Him only when I have no other choice. I truly wanted to surrender my life to Him wholeheartedly, and to be able to trust that He’ll work in my life and do what’s best for me.

That night was indeed special, I felt so in tune with God, I felt so safe knowing that God will always be there with me, to walk with me in every step. But after the camp, indeed, I trust God more, but the safety that I felt during the camp has diminished.

For me, the camp was not a magical boost that instantaneously accelerated my walk with God. But it was a turning point, a point for me to surrender my life to Him. During the altar call, I wanted to surrender everything to God, but that doesn’t mean I could. I still have problems trusting Him in everything that I do, especially in terms of academic results, university applications, and my future in general, but I’m learning. I’m learning to let go; I’m learning how to give everything to God, uncertain as my future may be. And I know, that as long as I’m willing to try, God will be near me, to help me to trust Him.

My faith was not in vain; I didn’t get any interview offers during the period of the camp, and I’ve gotten an interview offers, and waiting for more, hopefully. But I know, I have to trust God. Because truly, nothing is impossible with Him. During the camp, Dan told me, so convincingly, “Don’t worry, if God wants you to go to a particular university, He will let you in no matter what. He is God! He can even use lightning to strike down the admissions officer.” True enough. I am learning, slowly but surely, to have faith, and to trust God with my life, and to let Him in.

He is standing at the doors of our hearts, knocking. All we have to do is to let Him in, and allow Him to be part of our lives. Only then, will He have a chance to let our life overflow with Blessings from above.

every year, we gather in church on the last day of the year, and this year, it's BIGGER than ever!

WEAR THAT OVERFLOW T-SHIRT and get ready for action. a LOT of action.
(don't worry if you don't have an overflow t-shirt, you can come on down with any other camp tee from the past years :)

beginning with a potluck at 6.30 p.m., we will move into a campfire and then the watchnight service.

don't worry about the quality of the food, because you will definitely LOVE it. every year at potluck, MCI means a different thing. Many Cooks Indeed. (HAHAHA just joking!) if you/your parents are able to contribute a small food item, just bring along something small for the rest of the church to enjoy!

the CAMPFIRE is when there will be SONG DEDICATIONS, and if you really want to hear your favourite song played that night, please msg/facebook/email/tagthetagboard JOSHUA YEO the title of the song and the artiste. do so BEFORE THE 31ST if you want to hear YOUR SONG played! (i mean, if you've composed a song you can send the song to joshua :D)

the campfire will end around 9.30 p.m., after which we will move into the Watchnight Service at 10.30p.m. it's a time where we reflect on the past year, commit the new year to God, and start the new year with Him.
what better way to start the year than with God, right?

THE DAY WILL BE OVER FOR THE ADULTS, BUT IT IS JUST STARTING FOR US YOUTHS :D

we will be going to watch the sunrise at SAF ferry terminal (somewhere in ulu changi)! the events of the day are a SURPRISE, and only the organizers know exactly what is happening. hahaha, so if you want to join us, please tell candice/dan via FACEBOOK/EMAIL.

It was so encouraging to see all of you at Christmas Service. We want to warmly welcome Melvin who was spotted sitting among the youths yesterday! And not forgetting, Juen Yi who was seen in church last sunday! We hope to see all of you more often too.
We also want to welcome Wei Jie as he is back to join us for a couple of days before leaving for Swiss again. We hope that you'll have a very treasured time!

so. every camp has a camp t-shirt unique to its theme! and how many of you can safely say 'I HAVE ALL THE CAMP T-SHIRTS AND I'M STILL WEARING THEM!' ?

these limited-edition shirts are even more sought after than Gucci's latest handbag or that Vertu handphone (ahem Joezer thanks for teaching us about prices). WHY? basically we don't do what ikea does, which is to produce in bulk and sell it off cheap. we produce in what we call bulk but actually is very little. so there are ONLY about 80 of each shirt floating around the world.
of course, each camper owns a shirt!

so today is FRIDAY, which means..IT IS TOMORROW.
OVERFLOW will officially begin tomorrow at 8am when you guys meet in church to take the bus! it's 8am, eight a m, so don't be late okay! according to Danthechairman if you are late we will leave without you. and that's rather sad right. yeah, so the bottom line is DON'T BE LATE!

okay, this will probably be the last post before overflow, because THIS pubteam will have to leave their precious precious laptops in the security of their homes and will have no other way to blog owing to their financial status and the inability to invest in a phone that can blog and stuff. oh right, i am rambling again. i mean the pubteam will lose all modes of communication other than the physical sort and maybe their handphones. yes so no more blogging.

how much wood would the logteam (HAHA) chop if the logteam could chop wood?

enough for a campfire.

so..the pubteam's not the only one gearing up for camp! pictures from another camera-toting camp-spy show that another team was putting their muscles to good use.

so the guys put all their energy into chopping, sawing and making all the necessary wood-related preparations for the campfire at OVERFLOW. i think we can call them the logteam (pun very much intended).

sawing piece after piece of wood and joining them together in complex variations, this reporter maintains that only they know exactly what they are doing (i mean, looking at the picture do you have any idea what they are making?)

so anyway, get ready to see these pieces of wood take centrestage! watch the sparks fly between them as they are used to fuel the flame! (side note: what if these pieces of wood are actually undercover things used for games? hmm. like hurdles or maybe some obstacle course! worth exploring, no?)

for this reporter, these pieces of wood serve as reminders for us, that just as we use them to fuel the fire, help it to burn and give off warmth to all who surround it, we must ask God for that fire for Christ, that burning desire to see what God sees for His people. then we ask for help in fuelling that flame in our hearts, so that through us people will see and feel God's love (:

pubteam crazy 10 hours

do you know what the crazy pubteam was up to yesterday??
in their own words, "we were camping out in church having a filing competition."
it wasn't a real competition, but it was an immensely interesting one. in essence you could call it the FILING MARATHON for OVERFLOW 2008.

due to the unprecedented overflow of materials from the various committees, this camp file was THICK (like toastbox's thick toast.) and due to the same reason, the camp file took a whopping 10 hours to finish (including printing, packing, putting together, and creating a supersurprise for you people).

this reporter was at the scene yesterday afternoon, watching the pubteam take over (almost) every single piece of carpet in the church office, spreading all their materials around the office floor. the office photocopier was being overworked and underpaid (yes a common problem in this day and age), vomiting sheet by sheet of crisp printed paper by the second.

the pubteam were extremely energetic and truly made themselves feel at home, skipping around the office barefoot and completely unnerved by the whirring noises the machines made. the biggest joke of the day was when a visitor came up to the office and asked (astonished) "do i have to take off my shoes?" such is the far-reaching influence of this pubteam.

forsaking dinner and living off a packet of Oreos, this pubteam was pushed to their limits, staring at the lines of print, cutting, punching, gathering and filing for their lives. finally, when the clock struck ten, they were done. it had been a long day but from my observations they were consistently upbeat about their tasks, the camp and EVERYTHING. seriously, when the previous post said 'the pubteam is easily excitable' IT IS TRUE. i have no idea how they laughed so much about a piece of paper! or a phrase! or whatever! this reporter was seriously shocked at the state of the pubteam. laughing at every single thing indeed!

but that said, the laughter and fun played a part in helping them complete the long and arduous task. according to them however (or one of them) "when i serve in the camp committee, i can really rejoice." this pubteam knows who they are serving. do not reel back in shock when i say THEY ARE NOT SERVING YOU. they are serving God, and indirectly, that means they serve you too! (but they are not for you to bully.)

this reporter really needs some of that pubteam energy for camp! by the looks of everything, i only have ten more words to add.

camp is going to be awesome :)

we are the ones who will be bringing you the 'news' and latest updates for this camp throughout the duration of sign up and pre-camp.
we are the ones who will be broadcasting everything you probably need to know about OVERFLOW and the MCI Youth Ministry RIGHT HERE.
we are the ones who will make sure you have your t-shirts and your file before/during camp!
we are the ones who go crazy before camp and then have a slack time during the camp itself while the rest of the committees are in full swing.

armed with cameras, application forms and an ever-present half-crazed look, this pubteam is (easily excitable but) genuinely excited for OVERFLOW!

Headed by Shauna, the official team comprises Florence, Amelia, Faith and Meng Yih (haha remember our ah gong and ah ma?) but the unofficial one includes EVERY ONE OF YOU!

so anyway, we are definitely not excluded from the obligatory pre-camp interview!
(hahaha, we interviewed ourselves. no wonder we're half-crazed!)

Prayer & Evangelism

It's the time again for us to introduce to you the next 2 committee members of the OVERFLOW organising committee! Well, the areas that they are in charged of are usually always understated, but it is apparent that their hearts are filled with love and passion for the youths.

They are the driving force behind the 9pm synchronised prayer, they are the motivation to the youths, they are an encouragement to the youths and they are the ones who intercede for the youths and this ministry.

Presenting to you....

Benjamin & Tabitha

Benjamin, is heading the all new sub-committee this year, called Evangelism.
With him are his other side-kicks, Felicia, Melanie & Mei Yi.

Tabitha, is heading (oh well, she's actually alone in this sub-comm), Prayer.

Let's find out what are their thoughts about OVERFLOW!

1. How does it feel being part of the overflow camp comm?

Benjamin: Hmm.... Great!.... haha. Really thankful for the opportunity to be serving God again!

Tabitha: its been pretty great really. tested my faith alot but the awesome fellowship and friendships strengthened and huge amount of support from people around (sometimes even the most unexpected kinda ppl) was God's way of telling me He'd be there and provide for me through it all.

2. what can the campers look out for this year in your sub-comm that makes it different from other years?

B: Wah... this one a bit tough leh.... cos still got a few things haven't fully ironed out.... but i think perhaps the altar call.... maybe for the group leaders, it may be learning to share Christ using evangelistic tools such as 4SL. For the devotionals, hopefully we can find stuff that can relate to both Christians and pre-believers, and stuff that are relevant to real-life too.

T: well, besides the initiative to pray as a ministry before camp, i guess this year will be a time for us to just really get ourselves lost in conversation with God-- as a whole camp, as a group and especially individually. and i pray too that it'll be a time for those who need to, to renew their commitment to Him personally.

3. what's the most difficult part of planning for your respective sub-comm?

B: Erm... maybe the fact that it's a new comm..... so when I approach people for sub-comm, they are like... what are we supposed to do?... yup... and maybe the time constraints...

T: It's really not a logistical thing that can be planned, and that is the most major challenge. it depends on the time i put aside to seek God and just wait on Him. it's a huge test of my personal walk with Him and my faith and that can be really really tough.

4. what's one thing you would like to say to all the youths out there?

B: Let's do our utmost to give our friends an opportunity to hear about God's love and the abundant life He has in stored for them!

T: Get ready to have the awesomest time of your lives guys, not just with the fun and games, but with discovering a God so great who still would wanna set aside time to listen to us. amazing, isnt He?

5. one word to describe your comm?

B: Faith-stretching?

T: (two words pleasee) A Gift.

WE ARE JUST DAYS AWAY TO OVERFLOW!!!!!!!!
sorry everyone if you are disappointed each time you refresh or visit this blog and if it seems as if the hype or the creativity has ceased, but NO! the truth is, we are all really gearing up for camp! It's just days away, and in the process of wanting to make sure everything is ready, we are really busy!

But still, there's always time to squeeze in to give you guys an insight!
Well, it IS true that every other sub comm works the hardest as camp is just around the corner and they will continue to work really hard during camp, and the slackest during the camp would be the pub team since our job begins way before camp starts. But still, my fellow righthand team members are overseas!! haha, so we are still occupied, collating the registration list etc etc.

If you are feeling kind, compassionate and excited for camp, you can go and encourage the other committee members! I bet they are working really hard to pull everything together as we count down to OVERFLOW!!!

4. Start trying to wake up every day with a smile on your face. (because when you are with us for 4 days, that's how your face will be like when u wake up every day!)
5. Start getting every one around you excited

If you truly care, you will surely pray.

If you really want God to work, you cannot wait for someone else to pray. Sure, there will be others who will pray, but what if no one else prays for the thing you wanted to pray about? what if they think differently or they don't face the same issues? if you want a miracle, if you want an OVERFLOW, if you have caught our wave, pray with us.

the camp we have all been hearing about is just around the corner! (i am not joking)
if you look carefully at the countdown - the one with the green worm - you will see that there are ONLY and i stress ONLY 15 days left to camp! if that hasn't hit you hard, you have about 15x24=360 hours left to prepare! 21600 minutes left to go running/do situps/go training/whatever! eh! 1296000 seconds left to become camp-ready!

we are not looking for the fittest people at camp! we're not even going to have a running competition.
just prepare yourself for camp mentally and maybe a little bit physically. remember to pray with us at 9pm everyday, and be prepared to receive that OVERFLOW from God this year. you don't have to be mr muscle to qualify to come for overflow (it wasn't on the application form what!) our God sees only the heart! :D

THE BOYS ARE BACK!

Presenting to you these 2 important guys of the camp committee.For this camp, one loves to sing & worship, one loves to carry stuff & has an eye for details. BUT both are musicians anyway. haha. Can you guess who's in charge of what for OVERFLOW this year???

Candidate 1: Shuo Xian

Candidate 2: Alvin

AND THE ANSWER.......

The WORSHIP team this year is headed by the one who loves to sing and shove this big black gadget in your face (it's called the camera). Who is he? It's candidate number 2...ALVIN!

The worship team ain't about all songs and music, it ain't about creating the nicest melody or the hippest tune. But they are the ones who will dilligently form the bands for the camp which comprises of a worship leader and musicians. What's a church camp without songs or music that we use to worship God? The team will also be responsible for choosing your camp theme song!(it's the song that we will keep singing and singing throughout the whole camp! haha)

Please don't think that these bunch of people are your performers. Our only audience is God. (:

Of course, these 2 boys are interdependent (in many ways.hee). The other team that goes hand in hand with the worship team is the.........logistics team! Why? There are so many musical instruments these days. So much for variety. More work for logistics!!

The LOGISTICS team is the one that truly puts in the most manual labour (blood, sweat, tears, you've got it all).
they are the ones who make sure this camp comm has everything they need to make your stay at camp challenge a good one, by ferrying all the stuff there and back from church. they are the ones who will make sure that all things big and small get to the campsite before the camp, and leave the campsite after that.
the musclemen with a good head for organization, this logistics team works in about the same way as the national library. they make sure everything listed in their extremely long logistics lists makes it to sembawang and then back to church.
They are also in charged of making sure that you will see a fire on your campfire night.

this year's logistics team, which is going to rough it out with 1000000+++ inanimate objects required for various camp activities by the camp comm, is headed by candidate number 1: SHUO XIAN!!

Together with him, he has a sub-team (of course right, you don't expect him to carry EVERYTHING) This group of young & strong boys dislike taking photos, and hence, explains the lack of their photos. But we don't want to disappoint our readers, so we decided to find a photo that best describes them!

OK enough of the lameness, let's find out what Alvin & Shuo Xian have got to say about OVERFLOW!

1. How does it feel being part of the OVERFLOW camp committee?

Alvin: It's stressful because there are many things to consider and schoolwork to juggle on the other hand. But all this effort is worth it, because the whole camp comm wants to give the campers a really good camp!

ShuoXian: Am I supposed to feel something? Er, privilege.... I guess?

2. What can the campers look out for this year that makes it different from other years?

A: I'm praying that it will be an exciting time of experiencing God and having fun together as a youth ministry... and I'm challenging all campers to come with joyful hearts and to join the youth worship teams in sincere, joyful song!

S: Expect not to get anything from me (Since George isn't around)

3. What's the most difficult part of planning for your respective sub committees?

A: I guess it's patience...to wait on God's voice and direction.

S: Finding fuel to burn for campfire night. i.e. PEOPLE!!!!

4. What's One thing you would like to say to all the youths out there?

A: Erm...I've said many things already, so go refer to the earlier questions. (:

S: *long pause* Don't know leh. Got lots to say like.... *censored* (Not suitable for your viewership)

5. One word to describe your committee?

A: Lonely (as you know, alvin has no sub comm)

S: Perfect!

Breakout November

As usual the Pub team will always be ready to capture any acitivity that is happening around Teck Whye. No just kidding of course! we will go to the ends of the earth if there is any spotting of MCI youths there. haha. But now recession, so must be prudent, cannot anyhow travel.

But over the last weekend, the Pub team was seen snooping around and our reporter: Ms Snoop is here to give us an account of the happening.

"MCI Youths and their dearly beloved friends were last seen at Settler's Holland Village. Fortunately for us, we don't need to go to the ends of the earth for them!

Free flow of peach tea and coke and unlimited number of times we can press the bell for help from the staff, the youths were obviously on their way to having the time of their lives.

From my observations, I noticed that they are a rowdy bunch of youths. Their voices were overpowering my own that i could hardly hear myself. From taboo to ugly ugly ugly to first hand to i-dont-know-what dragon/bridge game, it was no doubt these young punks had an awfully awesome time.

But who or what stole the limelight of that afternoon?? If YOU were there, you would have heard this really hilarious cheer that the camp comm was cheering. For those who have missed it, fear not! I've the handy video camera to capture it LIVE! But nothing beats being there and hearing it LIVE. So, just for you guys, keep a lookout and hang around the camp comm, YOU'll never know when they might just do that cheer again! U'll just be sure this ain't the last time you'll be hearing it."

On the 14th of November, our church had a corporate prayer service.
And surprise surprise! There were a handful of the youths present!

It was such an encouraging night to see people of all ages coming together to pray for the church, the upcoming events and for one another.

What better way to feel at peace and secure by telling God our petitions and needs than trying to solve and achieve them with our own human strength.
God can do the impossible, can we?
If we can't, then why not pray?

the list of things to do really goes on. yet again, it boils down to one question.
WHAT DRIVES US to do all these things?
i think here at the pubteam and the camp comm we have realized that it's not what we receive from these things we do that matters. it's not for the fame, not for the money (none though), and it's not for the sake of our faces either. we do it all for God. this God we serve is living, loving and lasting. we can talk with Him wherever, whenever, however. His love is deeper than the deepest oceans, wider than the seas. He was here since forever began, and will be here, well, forever.

at some point in history, the world became so filled with evil that God was sad. the people on earth were not obeying Him anymore. He was a fair God, so He had to judge them at the end. but God really loved Mankind. so He decided to send someone else He dearly loved to bear His judgement for the world.

so now, because of His love and our belief, we're saved from God's anger on that last Judgement Day. but hey! we're not superheroes. we didn't make a salvation for ourselves! someone else went and helped us take the blame. this special someone took all of God's punishment upon himself, although HE WAS ENTIRELY PERFECT.
how can someone be perfect?!?!?!

well you see, HE was God's SON.
'For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, so that all who believe in Him shall not perish but have eternal life. - John 3:16'

and you know what's the best part? God loves YOU too. it doesn't matter where you come from, it doesn't matter what kind of status you have in the world today. as long as you are able to acknowledge Him as YOUR God, realize that you have done wrong and seek His forgiveness, He will take you to be a part of his family.

see, isn't it awesome?
we were so undeserving of His grace, yet He still gave it to us.
we didn't acknowledge His presence in our lives, but He was always right there, waiting for us to invite Him in.

eternal life will be our prize, after we have run our races on earth with Christ.
it is not going to be easy, as we will face all sorts of suffering.
it is not saying yes and leaving it at that. it is saying yes, then using your life to show it.

He came, that YOU may have life, and have it abundantly.
He wants to come into YOUR life, and take you into His family.

at the end of the day it's not whether you come for OVERFLOW.
it's not whether you say yes to our invitation, but it's whether you say yes to Christ.

will you open your heart?
will you let this Jesus into your life?

Introducing the WELFARE team

THEN hello=welfare

yes! the welfare team is the one who will be taking care of your most immediate physical needs in this camp! starting with that first 'hello'! they will decide what kind of FARE you will be eating (i hope it is well fare), cooking up ways to encourage you throughout the camp and maybe hone their motherly instincts in the process.

Headed by TERESA, the team comprises Cassandra and Deborah!

Being part of the WelfareTeam might seem easy, but just imagine taking care of the needs of A HUNDRED campers?!?!

let's see how they feel about being in the WelfareTeam!!

1. How does it feel being part of the OVERFLOW camp committee?

Welfare: Happy and excited to see what we are able to do for the campers this year and see people respond to God. But of course, stressed at the same time la!

2. What can the campers look out for this year in welfare that makes it different from other years?

W (Confidently says): Good Food!

3. What's the most difficult part of planning for welfare?

W: Because the focus is different this year and we want to focus on encouragment, it has got to be different from other years.

4. What's ONE thing you would like to say to all the youths out there?

Welfare: WELFARE will make sure you are WELL FED!

5. ONE word to describe the WELFARE team?

Welfare: Motherly (Caring)

Publicity MIX Welfare!

If you are thinking that nothing much is progressing for camp,
If you are thinking that youths these days have much better things to do than sacrificing their time on planning a camp for you...

Well, you are wrong!
Guess what?!

Yesterday, there was an unexpected crowd at a place where we love to be at for discussions. Guess where? It's not that hard, really. haha. Yes, Macs again! Some of the publicity members were supposed to meet up at Macs to discuss your camp file and upon reaching, guess what? We saw 2 familiar faces among the crowd. haha. They are the lovely ladies from your WELFARE team! And what were they doing? They were planning the menu for your meals that you'll be having during the 4 days of camp. I had a privilege of choosing 1 meal!!

We had a really productive meeting and in fact, it was so fruitful that after our camp discussion, we started talking among ourselves. haha. WEll, girl talk. Of course .(we were all girls)

In the process, we were indulging in fastfood. (:

DON'T be fooled by Teresa's puppy look, she's all ready to take care of you at this camp!

Just want to say that we had such a wonderful time together. It was totally coincidental that we were at the same place, at the same time, on the same day!

So you see, your camp committee is working really hard to make this camp enjoyable for you. There's a lot of behind the scenes & sacrifices that they make which we might have taken for granted. I wonder why do they want to make the effort and sacrifice their time & effort (knowing that all young people are really busy people with a lot of other commitments), and the only reason i can think of, is that they simply want you to have the best time of your life at this camp. Your camp committee doesn't gain anything at the end of the day, YOU DO. And i believe if YOU DO, WE will as well. Won't it be a sheer waste if you guys aren't coming for camp?

Registration has started and to all the youths who have signed up, we look forward to having a great time this december! But the numbers are streaming in slowly, let's not rest on our laurels, and start inviting our friends and loved ones to join us this december. The best gift you can give them this year, is to introduce them to Jesus. Who or What can beat that?

To me, He is a someone always so faithful, always showering me with unconditional love no matter what i do, and no man on earth can beat that. People fail you, people disappoint you, people do things for you at a price. But God doesn't.

So, for this year...
why not give this camp a chance?
why not give the camp committee a chance to bless you?
why not give your friends a chance to know God?
why not give yourself a chance?
why not give God the chance?

today was another BIG day for the PubTeam cause we did another round of registrations today! (you know what, i think our days are getting bigger! JUST LOOK AT HOW MANY PEOPLE THERE ARE CROWDING AROUND OUR VISIBLE BOOTH IN THE MCI STADIUM!)

anyway, we are about 20 paces closer to our faith target of people for this year! we have amassed even greater fortunes of 20+ notes of varying denominations, as well as three cheques (counting in multiples of seven from one to four excluding three. HAH.)

WERE YOU AT CELL- Part 2

In continuation to Flo's post on this, I've some additional pictures to add on that crazy saturday the youths at MCI had! Did YOU know that there were 2 groups who had their cell at a place OUT OF THE ORDINARY? My group decided to do something different and so we left church. haha. Before we know it, we saw another group of familar faces!

It's not that hard. Hur hur.

Well, just have to say that it was what a weekend for us here at MCI.

BEHIND THE SCENES!

The camp committee heads met up on saturday night to have our second meeting together! It was productive. haha. All we have to say is that YOUR CAMP is in progress! We were all super excited as we updated and threw out ideas! (:

The night started off with a quick dinner cus chairman was chasing us all. haha. We spent some time praying for the camp and the campers. What can I say, but that it was such a meaningful time because it was so evident that everyone in that room really wanted the campers to experience our God of Overflow. And because, their faces/prayers reflected such an attitude and eagerness, God blessed the team with a wonderful encounter with Him as they prayed and planned. Our excitement is brewing!! ONE main highlight of that night: we were discussing your campfire night!! We can't exactly reveal what we are going to do otherwise it won't be a surprise. So, really, the only way to know, is for you to come and join us at OVERFLOW!

How Far Can We Go? What is Acceptable?

A couple of us youths attended this talk that was held last Friday. The topic itself was interesting, sparking a burning curiosity in many, with over 50 people in attendance!
And don't think this topic is just for the older generation; there were children in the midst as well!

Rev Daniel gave us very interesting insights about the orgins of Chinese New Year (CNY), Zhong Yuan Jie & Qing Ming Jie! The truth is, how many young people these days know how Chinese New Year came about?
For example, do you know that it originated from a dragon who hibernates for 1 whole year and only wakes up during CNY. It got hungry and began eating people and their livestock. The people in the villages found out that the dragon disliked the colour red and loud noises. They then made it a point to gather every year at the same period wearing red and making loud noises so as to scare the dragon away! And so, Chinese New Year evolved!

Some really thought provoking and interesting questions that were brought up were:

Can christians practice spring cleaning?
Should christians participate in rites & rituals?

Can christians go for Qing Ming?

Can christians eat food offered to the idols?

There was one example that the speaker brought up that night which got everybody's attention.

"In Chinese funeral practices there is the concept of human souls - the body, the mind and the soul. One will go to either Heaven or Hell, one will go in the tomb and one in the Ancestral Tablet.
After their death, their loved ones will go to the tablet and commune with the dearly departed and apparently, the dead also commune with them. This is where the question of how true this concept is comes in. If a concept is true, it will most definitely make sense, and draw ONE parallel, like in our Bible. You see, in Chinese philosophy, they believe in reincarnation.
So, if the dead is reincarnated, won't the tomb and Ancestral Tablet be empty? Shouldn't there be only one body?
Why are people still communing with the departed and still believe that they are responding to them?
Is there a loophole in this concept?
Is there really reincarnation?"

He left this as a food for thought for us all.

FIRSTLY, the NEW BANNER is up! (no it is not another guard for the sumo-victim of yesteryear) it's a countdown banner! thank you SHAUNA for painting the banner :D

YES. isn't it awesome! we have a physical countdown up in church AND an electronic countdown right here on the blog!
and there we have it. three terrific banners even the SPCB will be proud of. (don't worry, we will treat our banners well!)

SECONDLY, we thank God for Serene and her minispeech, which really made an impact!

the gist of it is highlighted in the video (: but isn't everything she said true? we ARE the best advertisements, we're the ones who are able to walk and talk, we are 3D, we have got a life! the other adverts are all like...uhh dead trees or virtual images. we are real people, the ones our friends trust. we are the ones they look at when they want to see what Christians are like.

LOOK AROUND YOU. i'm sure there are people around you who do not yet believe. they have yet to see what it means to believe in OUR GOD. they have yet to witness the awesome power of our Creator.

it's not just about picking up a form for yourself anymore. it's not just about coming to youth camp with the same people you come for cell on saturdays with.
this year, it's a whole new dimension.
it's an outreach.
it's a bold step.
it's going to be different. very very different.
trust God, reach out boldly, and prepare yourselves for that OVERFLOW.

How does it feel being part of the OVERFLOW camp committee?

Dan: There's a great sense of excitement and urgency as we plan this camp. There's much to be done, but so far, we're on track. Being part of the committee gives me great joy to be part of something bigger than myself, to be able to serve as chairman is a such a privilege and I won't let anyone down.

Truda: I’ll say it’s going to be exciting ‘cause I’ll be working with some people whom I’ve not worked with before. I’m also excited to find out how God is going to use all of us for His good works to His glory! Wonder what’s in store in His plans...

How did the word "OVERFLOW" come about?

D: We were having a meeting and Serene was pouring a drink and talking about God's blessings, and she was so engrossed that the cup started to OVERFLOW!
Ok, not really. Overflow came to us as an inspiration that hit Serene on the head. We tried to probe the word exhaustively during one of the earlier meetings and unanimously decided that it was too broad to handle. But before we moved on to narrow the theme, we were struck by how Overflow was so apt in describing how God really is, as a God who surpasses all our expectations.

T: In a nutshell, you’ve come to know your identity in Christ (through last year’s camp, and the study of Ephesians), that through Christ, the old has gone and the new has come. Now it’s time to understand fully the OVERFLOW of blessings that God has poured into your life... Blessings that spill over the brim! And it’s time to let these blessings OVERFLOW into how you live your life, and into your service to God and His people... to the glory of His name!

What does OVERFLOW mean to the camp committee?

D: Overflow is both a timely reminder about the Generous God we serve as well as a desire to see our expectations surpassed! We're actually catering for more people than we have in our ministry, so everyone out there can join us! We ourselves are expecting an overflow!

T: So blessed we can’t contain it! Oh wait... That’s our tagline!

What is something campers can look out for at this camp that is different from that of previous years' camps?

D: We're heading to the Great Outdoors this time, away from our computers, Xbox, Wii, DS, PSP.... sigh.
T: This year’s camp is going to be specially designed so that both MCI Youths AND all our other friends who want to join us can come together and have a really good time of bonding, adventure and fun. Also, for those who are curious about MCI, what God has done for us, or simply what it means to have God in our lives, this camp is the camp to go for!

5.What is one thing you would like to say to all campers (and potential campers out there?

D: Huh, only one thing? Hmm, Sign up lah! Then I'll have time to say the other things during the camp.
T: COME EXPERIENCE THE OVERFLOW!!!

6. One word to describe the camp committee?

D: HAWT - Hard at work...(thankfully).
T: Committed! (So everyone should just signup now!)

Hi Friends,

After a series of lame but very funny posts, it's time to get serious!! haha. yah, why so serious? (Dark Knight). We hope you are enjoying everything about the MCI Youth Ministry as much as we enjoy bringing to you the latest and juiciest news/insights about the ministry and a never seen before peeks about your camp committee and the reviewing the process the camp!

This post appeals to all MCI Youths and our new friends out there who are interested to join us!

We can't help but notice that there are only a few people who have downloaded the forms using our blog. Flo and I have been talking to each other almost everyday. haha. And I thought I should share this with all of you (: We always get very excited each time we visit the blog because we get to look at the counter and see how many people have visited the blog. Well, i don't know how accurate that is because I know for a fact, half of the numbers are from the chairman himself, the publicity team and our own youths. haha But still, 700 over!! Im sure the word is going around!
Flo emailed me and showed me this screenshot.

On it, the counter says "555" and check out the MSN pop up. It says "God show me a miracle" That's cass's signing in by the way!haha. How timely, isn't it? Flo and I were wondering how many people would turn up for camp because we usually have to estimate a figure to print the application forms & camp shirts etc... and as Flo emailed me this picture with the words "God show me a miracle", she said " I think He will this year, at OVERFLOW!"

So to all camp committee members, hope you are encouraged and you have renewed hope because God will do what we cannot do. Keep persevering and do your best in whatever you are entrusted with! For we serve a great & mighty God who can do the impossible!

To all MCI Youths, pick up your forms and sign up now and await in anticipation for a wonderful time of fellowship with your brothers & sisters and have a special encounter with God! Do your best & invite your friends!! Pass the word around.. and lets turn camp challenge (Sembawang) into a place where we will all remember the OVERFLOW that God is going to give to us!

MCI YMystery

this reporter had nothing much to do today, and thus decided to investigate a mystery - and as there were so many mysterious things happening in the MCI Youth Ministry, this reporter decided that some of the happenings in the MCI YMinistry caused it to be transformed into the MCI YMystery.

long long ago, in the land of emcee-eye, there was... a soccer ball. it was round (haha, yeah.) and, well, that's all most people remember about it.
anyway an eyewitness was quoted as saying that the guys were kicking it around as usual (and subjecting the poor ball to severe physical abuse), when they decided they were tired and went off home, leaving the ball behind.
some admitted that it was their own fault the ball went missing, but others felt that others were to blame for the ball becoming another person's plaything.

WELL, this reporter likes a good investigation. and in this case, due to the lack of observable evidence (the ball went missing rather long ago), this reporter had to rely on cross-referencing on over 10000 divided by 1000 accounts of what they thought had happened.

based on the information, this reporter gathered that:

the ball was mistaken for rubbish and thrown away, after which it would have either been brought to pulau semakau and dumped in the landfill, or thrown brutally in the incinerator.
the ball couldn't stand the abuse anymore (despite its lack of limbs) and decided to hire a private jet (maybe a bird) and be hoisted to paradise.
some youths think miss lai was responsible for the mysterious disappearance of the soccer ball.

based on logical reasoning, this reporter decided that options #1 and #2 were invalid.
#1: the ball was in a relatively good condition, and mistaking it as rubbish? hmmm. it's questionable.
#2: the ball did not possess the mental capacity to plan such a detailed escape route (it was a big airhead!) it was not given a salary and hence would not be able to hire a private jet.

hence, #3 seems to be the most logical reason. after all, miss lai could have taken it to remind the guys to not leave their soccer balls lying around church, or she might have wanted to just deter them from playing soccer in church due to the fragility of church property. whatever the reason, a LOT of people (<10) think that miss lai has the soccer ball, and that she caused it to mysteriously disappear.

however, this reporter does not think it is THAT simple. want to help us solve the mystery? there will be about 100 people for YOU to interview about this MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE at OVERFLOW, that is, if YOU come and join us.

TODAY marks a significant milestone in the preparation running up to OVERFLOW!

first things first, we had the exclusive gala premiere of the FIRST publicity video during service today! check it out (:

straight after that, REGISTRATION BEGAN IN CHURCH TODAY!

as of today, we have amassed a total fortune of ... $21000 dollars (please note that the decimal place has been intentionally eliminated.) not bad for first-day takings, no?

in addition, after a brief tussle with the new photocopier in the church office, we printed a whole new batch of OVERFLOW forms! if you need an application form and don't have a printer or whatsoever, you can just drop by the church and pick up a form! they are still hot, i think, thanks to global warming.

OKAY, today also marks the day the PUBteam (no we do not deal with your utilites) gathered to discuss the TSHIRTdesign! (yes we think about what YOU will wear.) we acknowledge that fashion is subjective, but we are SURE you will wear these shirts, because you have to anyway. but NO besides that, we know that with the God-given capabilities of the PUBteam to create and design (what you are reading is all PUBteam!) the shirt will be more than awesome. it will be an overBLOW. hahaha just joking.

are you wondering which two people are in charge of the committee this year?

WE ARE.

today, we'll meet the two VERY IMPORTANT PEOPLE at the helm of the team which is in charge of this project you all call "CAMP."
this first equation is simple:
so at the head of the fraternity called the "camp committee", we have...
our chairMAN DAN, and our vice chairwoman TRUDA!
as you can see, DAN the chairMAN spends a lot of time thinking!

AT THE HELM...Name: Daniel Lee (he's not the right one. hahaha just joking. he's on the left!)
Position: Chairman
Oversees: Worship, Recreation, Logistics

This is the man who will be seated at the head of the table at every Camp Committee meeting. He is the one with the creativity, the ideas and the lawyer-attitude to carry his arguments through. The #1 task for him would be to decide on the focus and direction of the camp, and then make sure the rest of the committee is clear about it and are working together to carry it through. Born with a naturally glib tongue, Chairman Dan will always have something good to add to the discussion, or something funny to lighten up the mood. He likes to smoke too, although it is of the variety less hazardous for health (hahaha).

Starship TRUPA (truda)!
Name: Truda Kwan
Position: Vice-Chairwoman
Oversees: Administration, Publicity, Welfare, Prayer

This vice-chairwoman provides the special balance in the top team, and takes it upon herself to ensure that the discussions come back to earth (put it this way, Chairman Dan likes to think out of the box). A master of the English Language, she is the one who takes down the minutes for every single Camp Committee meeting. Supportive and organized, it is no wonder then why she is in THIS top job, as the VICE-CHAIRwoMAN of the Camp Committee for OVERFLOW.

today, this reporter made a trip down to the crime scene to see what new developments had been made in what has become the hottest news story this year. this reporter watched in absolute awe as two brave doctors from the SPCB (Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Banners) came down to resuscitate the twisted wreck of the sumo victim.

with perseverance, the two heroes poured their blood, sweat and tears into unraveling the victim and giving it more crutches for support. in addition, they deployed a bright purple guard to stand with the victim, and offer psychological help and guidance.

when interviewed, the team expressed their thanks to the SPCB for their kind help in the recovery process of the victim, both physically and psychologically; and to mS.hauna.Opqrstuvwxyz for her advice and help in locating a suitable guard for the victim's future safety.

it is in such times that a B is better than an A. lucky we had the SPCB don't you think! the SPCA wouldn't have been able to solve any problems!

AND IT HAS HAPPENED!
unfortunately/sadly/madly, the pretty amazing/amazingly pretty banner (see previous posts) didn't have enough wind-gaps/gave up/whatever.

the victim was discovered early this evening by our roving reporter who happened to be passing by. the victim was hanging limply on one pole, wrinkled and creased. in a bid to find out exactly what happened, our reporter scoured the crime scene for bits of evidence that would prove useful in finding out the cause of its premature death.

my observations were that...
#1: the victim was found bundled neatly in a heap to one side of the fence
#2: the victim could still be resuscitated (i.e. time of death = not long ago)
#3: the victim was hanging on one pole instead of two BUT pole was thick.
#4: pole was snapped! (i.e. sumo wrestler came along and broke it in an act of rebellion.)
#5: there was no sign of bleeding or wounds from physical attacks (apart from the stick)

and so, i think...
the sumo wrestler was passing church today and decided he'd like to come for camp as the victim was too attractive. he ran up the slope to get a closer look and realized that there were NO DETAILS of how to register! he was so angry accidentally snapped one of the poles (yes the pole is thick but he IS a sumo wrestler!) the victim was hanging on. when the victim flopped to the floor, the guilt-ridden sumo wrestler decided to honour his unintentional victim with a proper sumo burial, by bundling the victim neatly in a heap to the side of the fence.

and there we have it.

so if your friends ask you WHY THE BANNER IS NOT AROUND you know what to do (:

DID YOU KNOW that the MCI youths have a SOCCER MINISTRY?
the MCI stadium on a Saturday evening screams "SOCCER" at all who pass by. the guys of the youth ministry abandon all else after cell, to answer the call...of a soccer ball. although the girls can't seem to hear it, it is a unifying signal for all the guys to run down to the stadium and get their heads in the game.
not too long ago, they decided to take it one notch higher, and from playing amongst themselves, they were transformed into the renowned MCI SOCCER TEAM, terrorizing - no - pitting their skills against teams from other local organizations.

THIS WEEK, they will be meeting the team from TEEN CHALLENGE! if you would like to go down to support them, ask Aaron for more details! we are always behind you guys!

What an EXCITING week!

Hey Everyone!

We hope you are enjoying this blog as much as we do! As we count down to our annual Youth camp, we want to give you a sneak preview of what Overflow Youth Camp is about this year! You'll have the insights of our camp committee meetings, you'll get to know your committee members and be in the loop about the crazy and happening things in the Youth Ministry. So all you really have to do is to visit this blog frequently!

Now for the first peek!

It has been such a happening week!

We met up with our camp chairman and vice for the publicity & admin's first meeting at LOT 1's foodcourt! I actually snapped more pictures but they are actually quite blur.haha. So, we promise more pictures introducing our camp comm members soon! Anyway, this picture shows the mess we made at the foodcourt.haha.

In the course of the week, some of the youths met up to do up a banner specially for the camp! It wasn't as easy as we thought it would be! We ended up with backaches and muscle ache the day after. Hilarious! And we took 1 hr to tie up the banner PLUS we had about 6 NS guys to help us. hahah. Anyway, thanks to all of you! We completed our first banner and it's now up in our church. Here's the process!

Over the weekend, the Youth Ministry also had our October Breakout Saturday! We went to the Botanic Gardens to have an afternoon of games such as Frisbee and Rounders. We ended off the friendly match with Tug-Of-War. God is so awesome because He gave us such a hot and sunny weather on Saturday when it has been raining continuously the past week! The group of 70 odd people then headed back to church for a Popiah Party! The popiah was amazingly good, either that, or we were just hungry. haha. We had such a good time laughing at the way people roll their popiahs. Ben's popiah looked like a "pao" hah! Teresa had to eat hers with fork and spoon cus she couldnt hold her popiah. hahaha. We were also treated to a much needed dessert to cool us down and quench our thirst.! Ice jelly & Chin chow!

But the best part of the night has got to be the charades. Thanks guys for being such a sport! We had such a good laugh!!! I can still remember seb and his wonderwoman. Is that what they teach u in army?haha. The photos are being uploaded in the meantime. Do stay tuned to this blog! We'll make the link available to all of you once it's done!! YOUTH MINISTRY BREAKOUT SATURDAY - NOVEMBER

King's Breakfast, Jenga Extreme, Naval Battles, Pass the Pigs. Do these names ring a bell? What about Monopoly, Taboo, Risk, and Mastermind?

That's right! For November's Breakout Saturday, it's Board Games galore! It is going to be a fantastic afternoon of pitting your wits and a little luck against one another. Stay and watch the grand finals of the board games masters at the last hour! Come and join us!
